Get some Jiu-Jitsu

Jun 29 2011

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo in the early 20th century. It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. That’s Jiu-Jitsu in a nutshell. (Thanks Wikipedia!)

(Get Schooled. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Professor Guilherme at The Standard Miami)

Now picture this. Professor Guilherme Arashiro (pictured above) being your teacher. Exciting isn’t it? Every Friday and Saturday, from 6:00 pm -7:30 pm, he will be sharing his wisdom and instruction on the practice to our guests or locals who sign up for his class (check the rest of the schedule here!). Guilherme is one of the most respected professors of this genre, so it’s a lucky treat to have his presence for a while at The Standard, Miami.

The rates are: $18 per class, or a 10 class pass $150. The “One on One Self Defense Training” course costs $180. Here is a little more info on the classes.

If you don’t believe our word for it, take a look at this months Vogue with a shout-out to our classes listed below…

Don’t forget to book your reservations by sending an email to spareservations@standardhotel.com or you can phone the Spa desk 305-704-3945. Now instead of hitting the local bar you can have an alternative healthy plan in South Beach every Friday and Saturday. Come join a Brazilian master and get your ancient practice on. You’ll feel better you did.
