His real name is David Abitbol, but he goes by the moniker “Japanster” due to his penchant for the country. David now DJ’s every Friday at Le Bain, Standard New York. Here’s an introduction to his world… 

What is your DJ name? Why?

Japanster. I guess it comes from a big crush I had on Japan when I went there in the late 90’s.

What genre’s of music do you spin?

It goes from post punk to pure African beats. I really love all kinds of music. I played an Arabic belly dance track last Friday just after a Fleetwood Mac song and people loved it.

Who are your favorite new bands?

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Male Bonding, and Xeno & Oaklander.

Do you have a special closing song of the night?

I usually play White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane.

If you could invite 5 people, living or dead to a dance party (or dinner party)?

Kurt Cobain, David Lynch, Serge Gainsbourg, Jack Nicholson and …. Jennifer Connelly.
