The Standard

You all know how much we love public art.  In actuality, our public art is trying to get home without embarassing ourselves after a few martinis on the 18th floor of The Standard, New York.  That’s always a masterpiece in itself.  Commission us for an installation!

This month we were very excited to have Naples-born and Los Angeles based artist Piero Golia use our favorite west coast hotel, The Standard, Hollywood for his latest installation.  Golia is known for his eccentric flair for theatrics.  At the Artissima art fair in Italy, he climbed to the top of a palm tree until an art collector paid him to come down.  (We’ve done that before for FREE!)  During Art LA, he crashed a 35-foot bus into an art fair booth.  (We were driving it with martini in hand….OOPS!)

Golia pulled up a crane outside the hotel and installed his latest and most innovative installation on the roof of The Standard, Hollywood.  This work is a luminous glowing orb of light meant to be seen for miles away.  The globe of white light is about 5 feet in diameter and will shine brightly when he is in town and then it will go dark when he is away.  It’s a signal to all his friends of his whereabouts while mesmerizing drivers on Sunset Boulevard with its enigmatic meaning.

Golia said of his work, “I wanted to learn the sign language of L.A.  It’s a city where signs are very powerful, where the Hollywood sign came before what we think of as Hollywood.”  The only sign we give is a finger pointing to our empty martini glass.  We thank our lucky Stans that most bartenders know what that means!

If you’re in Los Angeles any time soon, make sure you drive by the hotel to see whether Golia is in town or not.  Your next order of business is to actually find him should the orb be glowing brightly.
