Ty's Fight

Sep 28 2011

Tonight, Friday, September 30, 2011, DACRA and Design Miami will host F*CK CANCER: The Ty Bassett Benefit Bash at the Moore Space in the Design District to raise much-needed funds instrumental to the survival of our friend Ty Bassett, who is probably one of the most loved and unsung hero’s back when Miami Beach was blossoming into a strong neighborhood. There will be a massive party with an open bar, food, dancing, poetry on demand, and a swanky raffle and silent auction.

Here is the backstory: In March 2005, doctors diagnosed then 36-year-old Ty Bassett with a very rare form of Cancer, Synovial Cell Sarcoma. Sarcoma survival rates are grim, at best. Ty defied the odds and following months of brutal chemotherapy and a leg amputation, he was back on his feet (one real, one metal) and focused on raising his infant son, Joseph.

Three months ago, Ty’s cancer returned in the form of two ugly tumors in his lungs. Miami Doctors pronounced his disease to be Stage IV. “Cross your fingers,” they offered, “and you’ll get a good 23 months.” Ty had already lost a limb to cancer and he was damn sure not about to lose his life, too. So, off to the revered MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas he journeyed for a second opinion. Today, Ty has three rounds of in-patient chemotherapy under his belt and flies to Houston, Texas every few weeks to meet with his Sarcoma team. The end is still a long, long, LONG way off and the cost of treatment, travel and expenses are already mounting by the hour. To have any chance of a shot, Ty and his family need help.

Please join Miami’s cool crew of creatives in raising funds to save Ty’s life. Tickets can be purchased online for $25 at www.FCancerTy.org. And if you are unable to join us on the dance floor, kindly consider donating any manageable sum to this very important cause. Friday, September 30, 6-10pm at the Moore Building located at 4040 NE Second Avenue, Miami Design District.
