Often referred to as “Spiritual Warriors” (bu= warrior, do=way, kon=spirit) because of their combat expertise and our deep concentration on the spiritual, mental and emotional development aspects of yoga and martial arts, the Budokon Academy has named The Standard Spa, Miami Beach, as its International Headquarters. Many have gained their belts while studying at weekly Budokon yoga classes (open to public) with Sensei Donato Helbling, while others have traveled from across the world to study with Budokon founder, Cameron Shayne.

Cameron has quite an extensive biography with years of experience in martial arts and a laundry list of celebrity clientele. Cameron is a philosopher, writer, yogi, martial artist, movement pioneer, and the creator of the Budokon martial/yogic/living arts system. When he’s not busy touring world-wide to teach Budokon, often Cameron can be found teaching and relaxing at The Standard, Miami. This coming weekend Budokon will be back at the hotel - see details below - and we’ll also celebrate Kancho Cameron Shayne’s birthday which is becoming somewhat of a tradition.
What attracted you to martial arts?
I was attracted to martial arts because of its mystical qualities. The power to control the mind and body through any condition resonated with me. I saw that I was not always in control of my thoughts and actions under all circumstances, and desired to be.
Tell us how Budokon came about…
I desired to create a practice that combined martial and yogic principles with a primary focus on cultivating character in people rather than physical conditioning. That is what we do differently than other systems. We physically make our focus on the development of passionate, effective, competent people who can love and live from a place of abundance rather than struggle.
What is its philosophy?
The way you do anything is the way you do everything.
Do you meditate?
Yes, I do. I do seated meditation and I meditate while I move throughout my day.

Tell us about what a Budokon training weekend includes?
Our weekends are divided between the physical practice of yoga and martial arts and the mentally inspiring life coaching sessions. Our weekends are very special for those people who are looking for ways to grow and learn more about themselves as adults.. now they have a place to go. We teach the tools for a better way of living through movement, mind, nutrition, and communication. Budokon is not yoga, or martial arts, or life coaching… it’s all of it. It’s Budokon.
What makes a budokon yoga class different than a regular yoga class? It is the focus on the quality of the transitions between poses, getting in and out of them with control and grace (so that then in life we can get in and out of challenging situations in the same way). Even though they are challenging, our yoga classes welcome beginners, even if they have never done yoga! They are sequenced to help you build a strong foundation for a sustainable practice. The martial arts portion is reserved for people who sign up for the academy program, because they want to learn the whole system or become teachers.
The Standard: What zodiac sign are you?
Cameron Shayne: I am Sagittarius.
