It’s a busy week at The Standard, Hollywood. We’ve got Art in the Parking Space happening on Tuesday and a particularly epic Desert Nights on Wednesday including Rachel Goodrich, “the queen of the Miami indie rock scene” according to that rag, The New York Times. If you miss Rachel this Wednesday, she will be back on the last Wednesday of February and March as well.
Rachel Goodrich is just as clever on Twitter as she is on a kazoo.
Rachel Goodrich: Miami Beach-based singer/songwriter Rachel Goodrich’s eclectic blend of vaudeville-inspired indie pop, swing-jazz and country-folk (the artist frequently describes her sound as “shake-a-billy”) is made all the more singular by the vast number of instruments at her command. A musician since her single digits, Goodrich’s first compositional tool was the guitar, but as the years progressed, so did the bells and whistles, culminating in an arsenal that included ukulele, spoons, mandolin, piano, kazoo, banjo and autoharp. The Florida native’s self-released debut album Tinker Toy arrived in 2009. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

The boys from Filligar make rock ‘n roll. It’s their job and they’re good at it.
Filligar: Hailed as “one of the best young bands in America,” Filligar is the Chicago rock n’ roll quartet comprised of the three Mathias brothers—Johnny, Pete, and Teddy—and their lifelong friend Casey Gibson. Drawing comparisons to a “young Rolling Stones” and called “the next Kings of Leon,” the band gives classic rock their own unique and distinctly modern edge. They’ve headlined sold out shows at the nation’s most acclaimed venues, toured the United Kingdom to wildly enthusiastic audiences, and recently supported both The Black Keys and My Morning Jacket. In December 2011, the powerhouse music blog RSL named Filligar one of the top 8 live acts in the USA, along with fellow Windy City band Wilco.

The Blank Tapes: “We discovered this lo-fi unsigned band - which somehow evokes Belle and Sebastian, Pavement, and the Black Keys - in a San Fran coffeehouse (just like the old days.) Quick, somebody sign them!” -ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE
THE BLANK TAPES: The Blank Tapes is the monicker of LA/SF based multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter Matt Adams, who has produced 7 albums of “winsome pop tunes” (OC WEEKLY) & “Kinks-plus-Creedence roots-rock ‘n’ roll” (LA RECORD) recorded almost entirely by himself on an 8 track cassette tape recorder in garages, basements & sheds across the coast. They recently toured Brazil for their second time after having 2 of their songs featured in TV commercials. They also recently played 3 shows in 1 year at the Great American Music Hall in SF, headlining 2 of them! Adams and co. are currently finishing up a new studio album called VACATION as well as numerous other albums. “Landfair Best Pop/Rock Album” -INDEPENDANT MUSIC AWARDS. “BEST NEW FOLKIE” -SF WEEKLY
What is Desert Nights?
Desert Nights is a weekly gathering at The Standard, Hollywood, hosted by KCRW’s DJ Valida. Every Wednesday, Valida curates three acoustic musical acts to perform a set in the Cactus Lounge. The vibe is warm and intimate, evoking an impromptu jam in a musician’s living room. The music begins at 7:30pm, it’s always free and always a good time. Guaranteed.
