Desert Nights: Wellspring + Kristin Diable + Gaby Hernandez and Emile Poree

Feb 06 2012

There’s nothing like great music, a couple cocktails, and a warm California night. That combination comes pretty close to perfect. Join us this week for another perfect line-up of The Standard, Hollywood’s Desert Nights.

Check out this great tour video of Wellspring. Love them, right? Make sure you Like them on Facebook.

Wellspring: Talia and Dov met in New York in 2009 when Dov, then lead singer/ songwriter of local band ‘Fools For April’, met with Talia, then VP at a film production company, about placing his music in their films. Talia fell in love with Dov’s music, and Dov discovered that Talia had sung in a band for years prior to her career in film. Months later, mutual fans of each other, the two decided to take a stab at writing together. Talia sent Dov a torrent of poems. It was these poems that sparked him to write music fervently into the wee hours of morning. It was this music that would inspire her to sing again. Together, they discovered a wellspring of music. Talia quit her job and the pair spent all their free time writing and recording together in Dov’s home studio. Their music, which has been called “a mixture of The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, indie rock, and a touch of country,” has taken off. The duo will release the new record in the first quarter of 2012. They will tour nationally in support of another large act (TBA) to promote the new release.

The lovely Kristin Diable

Kristin Diable: Kristin Diable’s set is a mix of ballads, heart-breakers and travelin’ tunes in a lamentation of love and sex and hope and dreams. Kristin’s full-throated bluesy vocals invite loose comparison to fellow Louisianan Lucinda Williams…Prepare to soak up her unhurried phrasings while she savors each note with luxuriant sultry power and a dreamy abstracted quality. Each beautifully conveyed line spills forth from her lips like sweet strawberry wine. Everything she embodies screams of a time since passed and her music is the perfect example - her 60’s Folk/Blues/Soul influence is immediately distinguishable. Kristin is a resplendent story-teller without fault, every song is like a hammer-blow to your senses, evoking images of Louisiana traditions and tales. You can take the girl out of the South but you can’t take the South out of the girl. Kristin Diable is a blend of rootsy rock stirred with spoonfuls of folk, soul and blues and sung with passion and fervor.

Gaby Hernandez, looking like a sunshine daydream.

Gaby Hernandez and Emile Poree: Gaby Hernandez (vocalist) and Emile Porée (Jazz vocalist and guitarist), both solo artists based in Los Angeles, join forces to create musical sets of their solo works. Gaby with pieces from her recently released full length “Sweet Starry Night” and Emile with material for an upcoming album. Together they create cosmic, ethereal moods that wake the heart!

What is Desert Nights?

Desert Nights is a weekly gathering at The Standard, Hollywood, hosted by KCRW’s DJ Valida. Every Wednesday, Valida curates three acoustic musical acts to perform a set in the Cactus Lounge. The vibe is warm and intimate, evoking an impromptu jam in a musician’s living room. The music begins at 7:30pm and it’s free.
