Susan Kirschbaum Gets Her Friends Naked: Richard Phillips & Theaster Gates

Apr 06 2012

Weekends in New York can often be more hectic than the weekdays. How does one find time for those out-of-the-way, been-meaning-to-check-out “things?” Luckily, freelance reporter, Susan Kirschbaum, has done the legwork for us, reporting back with “naked” – unedited, that is, everyone remains fully clothed – videos from the cultural frontier. Check back Saturdays for your weekend fix

Artist Richard Phillips, known for his larger celebirty inspired canvases, talks about freeing Lohan; his fiance’s oil drill; and how to live and love an artist without killing her. Richard recently filmed Lohan and porn-star-turned-actress, Sasha Grey, for a film that will debut at Art Basel this June.

Sculptor and Urban Planner, Theaster Gates, was the only commissioned artist at this year’s Armory Show. He not only created three Armory pieces to benefit the Cancer Fund and MoMA, but decided to invite onlookers to a round table to discuss civil rights and politics. Art in Review calls him, “Anthropologist, urbanist, activist, and the 21st-century artist.”
