Desert Nights with American Bloomers, The Northstar Session, and Trevor Menear

May 07 2012

Gather round for another fantastic night of music, courtesy of The Standard, Hollywood. This Wednesday’s Desert Nights line-up is aimed to please. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy!

American Bloomers: American Bloomers is the union of three singer/songwriters: Jaime Wyatt, Jane Sheldon and Jonathan Sheldon. Their voices blend seamlessly over jangling acoustic guitars and Stonesy electric riffs. The music is crafted in the fashion of Lennon/McCartney, with songs that echo of love, heartbreak and heart-wake.

The Northstar Session: Influenced heavily by the rock and roll sound emanating from Hollywood, CA and the surrounding areas in the 1960′s and 1970′s, The Northstar Session chose to pay homage to many of these bands by recording 2 of their albums in studios in historic Laurel Canyon. This “Laurel Canyon Experience” as they call it, breathes life and energy into in their music, and is often reminiscent of styles you’ve heard before — pop melodies with creative harmonies and countermelodies that harken back to bands like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Neil Young, The Beach Boys, Delaney and Bonnie, Little Feat, and countless others. In fact, keeping with this pattern, their most recent LIVE ACOUSTIC ALBUM, Echoes From The Canyon, was recorded in a beautiful house in the hills of Nichols Canyon. Trevor Menear: Trevor Menear dropped out of the sky in 2007 making his first appearance on Yoko Ono and Warner Bros Records joint effort Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur. Along side 50 other artists which included Willie Nelson, Ben Harper, Regina Spector, Jakob Dylan, The Cure, Jackson Brown and U2; The 22yr old Chicagoan recorded his version of Lennon’s “John Sinclair” with an antique Meissner 78rpm record lathe, cutting directly into a vinyl acetate. This raw introduction was more than enough to set him apart from the rest of the cast, foreshadowing the classic roots inspired nexus of his writing. His debut Introducing Trevor Menear released under indie label Shangri-La, reveals an accessible blues-pop hybrid. His expressive voice bolstered by his plangent, nuanced guitar work, immediately conjures up images of Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix. Following with the independently released EP Boots For Alice, Menear’s music continues to span an eclectic gamete that gains him notoriety among heritage jam fans, art-loft acidheads and many others in between.
