I’M TOO SEXY? Jimmy Edgar

This Sunday, September 30, Le Bain presents a much-anticipated New York live show by Jimmy Edgar. Currently based in Berlin, the Detroit-born artist has been making quite a name for himself with his sexy (sexy!) brand of futuristic electronic funk. He just released his new album, Majenta, to rave reviews on both sides of the pond, and we thought it might be fun to present a few choice quotes to Jimmy, and have him respond. Below, he gives his feedback …

Time Out London: “Jimmy Edgar seems to have nailed the connection between Prince and Alan Vega”.

Jimmy Edgar: “That’s hilarious! Also, I’m not embarrassed to admit I don’t remember who Alan vega even is. Isn’t that the singer from Suicide? If so, then that’s amazing. They sorta hit it on the head. I’m down.”

Time Out New York: “Jimmy Edgard has over the years honed a electro-sleazy, sexed-up kind of sound that’s kind of like a computer-world version of Prince—with a few short circuits in there to keep things nice and weird.”

Jimmy Edgar: “Cool and flattering. I’m pretty sick of people saying my music is sleazy and sexed-up, though. I hear it all the time. I’m switching it up now. There was a time when I thought everything needed to be more sexy, but I’m more interested in heightened spirituality and alchemy these days, especially in the context of music.”

Resident Advisor: “Nomadic sex fiend Jimmy Edgar has found a new home … Electro, pop, R&B and plenty of sleaze: it’s all here in abundance on Majenta, the U.S. artist’s latest full-length.”

Jimmy Edgar: “It’s all the typical words reviewers use, but overall it’s right. I consider my music my own style of R&B, mostly.”

Jimmy Edgar LET YRSELF BE

Pitchfork: “…Jimmy Edgar is insatiable. He loves talking about sex, singing about sex, referencing sex.”

Jimmy Edgar: “Damn, I sound like a sex freak. I’m actually more referencing the tension around sexuality rather than actual sex. It’s always the frustrated ones that are the obsessives!”

BBC: “As difficult as it is to take Edgar seriously at times, so earnest is he about his sexualised sonic seercraft that resistance is futile. In short spurts, Majenta’s cosmic perv-core satiates.”

Jimmy Edgar: “I also make pop music, or at least reference it a lot. I think a lot of my music is funny! I like seeing people laugh and smile and have fun! I would hope people don’t take me that seriously. I certainly don’t. This is important to me. I like making people feel cool and sexy and part of something. I love nothing more than fans saying they did ‘this’ to my music. Thinking about my creations being a soundtrack to a moment makes it all worth it.”

Jimmy Edgar This One’s For The Children (2012)

NME: “From the sounds of Majenta, he’s spent that time as you’d expect any self-proclaimed ‘star-child’ would: jet-setting between Detroit and Berlin, basking in the sexual energy and gilded debauchery of high fashion, and delving deeper into the classic ’80s funk and electronica that are such obvious influences on him.”

Jimmy Edgar: “Self proclaimed star child isn’t entirely accurate. I am a child of the universe, as we all are. I am more in touch with these things now than I was before. Once we all begin to make touch and loving communication with our brothers and sisters of the cosmos, then we will join them.”

This Sunday, September 30, Nouveau York and The Dog & Pony Show present Jimmy Edgar Majenta LIVE at Le Bain, with DJ sets by James Friedman (Throne of Blood), Paul Raffaele and Neil Aline. The Standard, Highline. 5pm-3am.(https://www.facebook.com/events/344556955624852/)
